Seven Stories into Spring: An Online Fiction Workshop

Seven Stories into Spring: An Online Fiction Workshop

Seven workshops on seven Sundays between February and May.

The course is fully booked. The next Stories on Sundays course will start in September. Please check out my other Short Story Writing Course in the meantime.

In this set of workshops, along with working towards a first draft of several of your own short stories, we'll look at putting together a collection that centres around a particular theme, whether it's a specific place, a group of people, an abstract concept or an historical event.

We'll look closely at stories from linked collections, such as Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried, VS Naipaul's Miguel Street, and Katherine Mansfield's In a German Pension, amongst others, and consider questions of scope, variety, and context when compiling a book of stories.

“It is spring again. The earth is like a child that knows poems by heart.” Rainer Maria Rilke

The workshops take place on Zoom on irregular Sundays (please check dates below). Write, share, and connect with other writers from around the world.

You'll be encouraged to keep developing your stories between sessions, and use the accountability that a small group of writers provides to complete a first draft of at least three short stories. All participants will be invited to share their stories on the workshop's private blog

The series of workshops is devised to suit writers of all levels who are willing to try out new ways of writing and thinking about writing. We'll look closely at other stories, but the focus will be very much on your own writing in the workshops themselves and between sessions.

Dates: 6 & 20 February, 6 & 20 March, 3 & 24 April, 8 May (please note that most sessions are fortnightly, except in April, where there's a 3-week gap between sessions)

Place: Zoom

Time: 5-7.30pm CET Click here for the corresponding start time where you are.

“...I was in love with the city, the way you love the first person who ever touches you and you never love anyone quite that way again. I remember walking across Sixty-second Street one twilight that first spring, or the second spring, they were all alike for a while. I was late to meet someone but I stopped at Lexington Avenue and bought a peach and stood on the corner eating it and knew that I had come out out of the West and reached the mirage.” Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem
