The Monthly Marathon: 6 Hours of Writing, 28 June

£90.00

For six hours on Sunday the 28th of June, we'll write and keep writing. Join me and other writers around the world for a marathon of writing exercises and experiments, ways to use different parts of your house as sources of inspiration and surprise, and – most of all – write together for the sheer joy of writing.

We'll write from 5pm till 11pm CET. Check here for the starting time where you are.

A writing marathon is a space to write. Whether you're working on a novel and want to add scenes to your project, or you'd like to start (and maybe even complete) a couple of short stories, or whether you'd just like to produce a significant word count to refine and expand later, The Monthly Marathon will provide you with the inspiration, community, and support, to keep writing.

Traditionally, writing marathons – first conceived and led by Natalie Goldberg – are a dedicated time and space to create work without critique, solely for the enjoyment of keeping the pen moving on the page. The belief is that the more we write, the deeper we go into our stories, moving away from our critical minds and reaching places where our writing surprises and moves us.

Writing marathons were further developed by Richard Louth to get people writing together in the city, writing in small groups in public spaces, from museum to café, from park bench to river bank. In The Monthly Marathon, we'll explore ways to write in different parts of your house, on different surfaces, facing different directions, and using landscapes such as the contents of your fridge, your sock draw, or your book shelves as a rich resource for fiction or memoir.

We'll also rely on the work of writers who tackle those political, intimate and existential themes built into the minutiae of everyday living, whether in times of crisis or calm. Writers such as Janet Frame, Jamaica Kincaid, Roberto Bolaño, Frank O'Hara, and Virginia Woolf will be some of our companions throughout the day.

At a time when our movement in the city is limited, The Monthly Marathon will offer tips, techniques and practical exercises to find inspiration in the spaces we inhabit, and will bring together writers from around the world to connect through our shared love of writing and creativity.

The Monthly Marathon is open to all writers everywhere, all levels, all genres, all you'll need is a willingness to write as an explorer in your own home, and be open to surprises in your work.

Once you've booked, you'll be emailed a link to the Zoom classroom.
